Context and Overview

In the Campinas/Katukina Indigenous Territory in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre, Katukina families from Mese Kamanawa Village chose to move away from the BR-364 highway to reconnect with their cultural roots and live in harmony with the forest. The lack of a safe water source exposed the community to waterborne illness and shortages.

Through this Conexão Ancestral project, the community achieved water and energy autonomy with an artesian well and a self-contained, fully sustainable photovoltaic pumping system.

Impact Achieved in Numbers

  • 12 families served: 100% drinking water coverage for the entire Mese Kamanawa Village community.
  • 10,000 litres/day: guaranteed minimum daily flow of clean, year-round water.
  • 30 to 60 metres deep: drilling that reached the productive aquifer, free from surface contamination.
  • 100% clean energy: a solar-powered pumping system with no fuel costs or dependence on external grids.

Infrastructure and Equipment Delivered

The project delivered a complete and autonomous water collection infrastructure.

Consolidated Results

  1. Public Health and Prevention: elimination of contamination risks and waterborne diseases through the daily supply of clean, treated water.
  2. Energy and operational autonomy: photovoltaic power reduces running costs and maintenance needs for the village.
  3. Territorial sustainability: direct support for 12 families reclaiming their territory and traditional way of life in the forest.
  4. Year-round supply: a constant, safe water source independent of climatic and seasonal fluctuations.
