Context and overview

In the heart of the Acre Amazon, in the Campina/Katukina Indigenous Territory, the Katukina (Noke Ko’í) community of Vari Viño faced severe geographical isolation. During the Amazonian rainy season and flooding of the Campina River, healthcare access, residents’ mobility and transport of agricultural produce were major challenges.

Through this Conexão Ancestral project, the village gained autonomy over its transport, safety and socioeconomic development with the delivery of its own river transport infrastructure.

Impact in numbers

  • 38 residents directly supported: safe, permanent and autonomous river transport for the entire village.
  • 9+ years of tradition strengthened: safe travel for practitioners, visitors and researchers to take part in the activities of the Noke Ko’í spiritual healing centre.
  • 3 agricultural crops connected to the market: guaranteed transport of cassava, banana and maize harvests for sale along the BR-364.
  • 100% logistical autonomy: elimination of dependence on third-party boats and guaranteed immediate medical assistance.

Equipment delivered

The delivery secured the community’s independence and eliminated dangerous crossings by providing equipment suited to navigation in the region.

  3. Logistical Autonomy: guaranteeing the community’s freedom of movement with its own boat adapted to the region.
  4. Cultural Continuity: strengthening traditional healing centres and providing safe reception for the preservation of the Katukina people’s memories.
